The 24th Annual NATHPO Conference is an opportunity for those involved in Tribal historic preservation to come together to live this year’s theme – Preservation with Purpose: Cultivating Collaborative Partnerships!

This conference has always been known for its hospitality, and we are looking forward to continuing in the rich tradition in 2024. Together with our generous host, the Ho-Chunk Nation, we aim to give our attendees the best possible experience as we celebrate the THPO community and our collective efforts in Protecting Native Places. NATHPO will present our Excellence in Tribal Historic Preservation Award at the NATHPO Conference August 12-16, 2024. This annual award recognizes Tribal Historic Preservation Officers who have made exemplary contributions to protecting culturally important places and perpetuating Native identity, resilience, and cultural endurance. Connections to cultural heritage sustain the health and vitality of Native peoples and THPOs are at the forefront of this work.

Eligibility: The awardee must be a member of NATHPO who has made a significant impact through her/his work protecting Native places or otherwise preserving cultural heritage. Nominees are THPOs who demonstrate exemplary achievement and quality of work in historic and cultural preservation, advocacy, building partnerships, and elevating the community of THPOs. Nominations may be made by NATHPO members. NATHPO staff can provide verification of membership status (join or renew today!).

Awardee is selected by the NATHPO Board of Directors following the June 17 deadline.

NATHPO invites you to share your knowledge and experiences in Tribal historic and cultural preservation. Presenting your work in this forum is a great way to reach others who work in similar topics, get feedback and encouragement, and build partnerships to support and continue your work.

This year’s theme is “Preservation with Purpose: Cultivating Collaborative Partnerships.” This is a historic moment of opportunity for elevating Native voices at the highest level. We must use this time to enact lasting transformational change for Tribal historic preservation.

We appreciate your interest in presenting information at the 24th Annual NATHPO Conference. Please understand that we cannot guarantee that you or your organization will be chosen as a presenter. Presentation selections are made based upon available time, conference theme, and material content. The Board of Directors may help NATHPO staff in selecting proposals.

As always, sessions and presentations on all relevant topics are welcome. We encourage you to think about how your proposed topic is related to the conference theme. If your proposal is accepted, we will ask you to provide presentation materials in advance of the conference.
