National Registry of Native
American World War II Veterans
As
part of our 6th Annual Meeting, the National Association of Tribal
Historic Preservation Officers (NATHPO) will host an Honor Dinner
for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian World War
II Veterans on Friday, July 9, 2004. The Annual Meeting and dinner
will be held at the Jurys Hotel on Dupont Circle in downtown Washington,
DC.
Thanks to the guidance and participation of several Indian WW II veterans, NATHPO will honor and acknowledge our WWII veterans through this Honor Dinner. In order to include those veterans who may not be able to travel, NATHPO is creating a National Registry of Native American WWII Veterans and respectfully requests that you send us information on the members of your tribe who served in WWII. Currently, this information is not available anywhere and the National Registry will be available for review and additions during the Honor Dinner, and will be posted on our website.

Many Nations: News from the Lewis and Clark Trail
The
National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (NATHPO)
and the Native American
Journalists Association (NAJA) joined forces to offer to all Americans
a web-based, Native American point-of-view on the three-year commemoration
of the Lewis & Clark bicentennial commemoration.
Indian writers, editors, and photographers worked with a variety of experts in the production of news items that were placed on the NATHPO website.

Protecting Native American Historic
Places on Public Lands
The
National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers hosted
a three-day training seminar for tribal governments interested in
creating a Tribal Historic Preservation Program, as well as learning
more about tribal historic preservation. In October 2003, NATHPO collaborated
with the Law Department of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
to offer NATHPO participants free admittance to a special, one-day,
legal workshop on protecting tribal historic places on public lands.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is selling the materials
from the September 30th Legal Workshop in Denver entitled "Protecting
Native American Historic Places on Public Lands" for $45 ($35
+ $10 postage/handling).
