As of June 1, 2011, there are 118 NPS-recognized THPOs. These Indian tribes have assumed the responsibilities of the State Historic Preservation Officers for their respective tribal lands. These 118 sovereign governments have a land base exceeding 53 million acres spanning 28 states.
