The White Mountain Apache Tribe and the Fort Apache Heritage Foundation invite you and your family to participate in the 5th ANNUAL FORT APACHE HERITAGE CELEBRATION & NDEE (APACHE) OLYMPICS, MAY 14-15, 2004.
On Friday, May 14, beginning at 6 pm, the doors open to the Nohwiké Bagowa (House of Our Footprints) Apache Cultural Center and Museum for a fundraiser preview of new exhibits, "The Footprints of the Apache" and “The Fort Apache Legacy.” The Legacy Dinner will include a silent auction, and the announcement of the Tribe’s designation by First Lady Laura Bush as a Preserve America community. The charge is $15 per person ($10 per child). Reservations are accepted; contact the Cultural Center and Museum at 928-338-4625.
All proceeds raised by the Foundation from the Friday and Saturday events will be used as matching funds for a Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The resulting Fund will provide cultural and historical programming at the Fort Apache Historic Park…Forever!
Plan to be at the Historic Park by 9:00 am on Saturday, May 15 to participate in the Grand Opening Ceremonies for the First-ever Apache Olympics. The 36th Army Band from Fort Huachuca will accompany the ceremony and the procession will feature:
Spiritual Leaders, led by Paul Ethelbah
White Mountain Apache Veterans Color Guard;
White Mountain Apache Royalty and Youth, Led by White Mountain Apache Tribal Council and Fort Heritage Foundation Board;
TR & WUSD School Students, Alumni, & Staff, led by TR School Board;
Other Tribal Communities, led by Elected Officials and Royalty;
Apache Families, Including Descendants of Apache Scouts;
US Army, led by Fort Huachuca’s garrison commander and B Troop;
Buffalo Soldiers;
Pioneers and Settlers, Led by Elected Officials of Neighboring Jurisdictions; others.
The opening ceremonies will conclude with a Cavalry demonstration by the world-famous B Troop re-enactors.
