The University of Arizona Poetry Center presents "Native Voices," a 3-day
symposium on Indigenous Language and Poetry with Keynote Speaker Leslie
Marmon Silko (Laguna) and numerous other distinguished Indigenous writers.
Native Voices will take place June 14-16, 2007 on the University of Arizona
campus.
Featured writers include Sherwin Bitsui (Diné), Briceida Cuevas Cob (Maya),
Nora Marks Dauenhauer (Tlingit), Joy Harjo (Muskogee/Creek), Rex Lee Jim
(Diné), Danny Lopez (Tohono O'odham), Simon Ortiz (Acoma), Luci Tapahonso
(Diné), Laura Tohe (Diné), and Ofelia Zepeda (Tohono O'odham). These poets
will read from their work, lead classes and workshops, and present a panel
discussion on the symposium topic. Additional distinguished writer/scholars
will also teach classes, including "Beauty of Sound and Meaning in Oral
Tradition" by Dr. Franci Washburn (Lakota) and "Indigenous Women Poets in
Mexico" by Dr. Javier Durán among others.
Native Voices is open to the public and registration has begun. Registration
fees are $120 general and $75 for student/elders. Discounted Early
Registration fees of $90 general and $65 for student/elder are available
until April 16, 2007.
